Karapiro penstock coatings

The refurbishment of the Karapiro power station is part of Mercury Energy’s ongoing Hydro Rehabilitation Project.

We work with Mercury’s contractors to provide blasting and coating services as required.

On a recent project with Andritz Hydro, we were required to abseil down the inside of the dam penstock to carry out spot repairs where liner coatings had been damaged by the scaffolding.

We have also worked with our sister company, AEC, blasting and coating the dam’s headgates.

We were also tasked with blasting and painting a very small, complex auxiliary penstock. For this project, we supplied a team of rope access technicians and we worked nights to maximise the efficiency of the dayshift contractors.

Other tasks at the Karapiro site have included; water blasting, abrasive blasting, lining repairs and coating applications.

“We engaged SCS to carry sandblasting and painting as part of the third unit rehabilitation at the Karapiro Power Station.  The scope included sandblasting and painting in the scroll case and penstock involving high build epoxy paint systems as well as general painting.  I was impressed that SCS listened to what was important to us as a customer and were able to meet those needs.  Time was very important to us as parts of the painting programme were on the project critical path and SCS were able to offer solutions to minimise paint and blast durations.  They have also been flexible and responsive to scope changes and variation works.  The site coordination and safety has been excellent.  I would not hesitate to use SCS again in future.”

Oceana Gold

Steel rectification and maintenance services

The Baxter Road Water Treatment Plant, part of the Oceana Gold Waihi Gold Mine site, requires a major ongoing refurbishment to extend the lifespan of the plant. We are responsible for the rectification of the treatment plant’s aging equipment and steelwork from planning through to project management. We are tasked with the blasting and re-coating of equipment, streamlines, hoists, loader discharge pipes, and tanks. We also provide ongoing maintenance work for the entire Baxter Road site. We are accountable for site safety and meeting shutdown timeframes.

“SCS impresses with their attention to detail and professionalism. Random task observations are part of our compliance control legislation and the SCS team are well above standard. The team is industrious, punctual, and follows instructions well. I am happy to outline task requirements and leave them to it knowing the job will be completed in a timely manner and to a high standard.”

Ballance Agri-Nutrients

Asbestos encapsulation and ongoing maintenance

We used a new technique to encapsulate a friable asbestos roof cladding at a Ballance site in Mt. Maunganui. We worked with sealant manufacturer, Altex Coatings, to find the best way to apply a new type of sealant that didn’t require the roof to be washed. With traditional coatings, the dust and dirt must be removed before spraying. With the extremely fragile nature of the Mt. Maunganui cladding, washing the roof was not an option. We collaborated with Altex to conduct extensive on-site trials in controlled areas. We used various spray pressures until we were able to achieve the desired outcome.

Alongside this encapsulation project, we also perform ongoing maintenance work for Ballance. Projects include concrete floor repairs and coatings and steel rectification - blasting and re-coating.

”SCS showed great initiative to seal a very fragile structure. They demonstrated an extremely high degree of health and safety awareness and compliance throughout the process.”
